Who am I

I am a highly motivated and clinically competent professional with over 24 years in the Nursing profession. I have experience in the hospital environment, rural nursing, and public health nursing. I am presently working in the Nursing Continuing Education Unit as I am passionate about the advancement and education of Nurses. As an educator, I have had some experience with the use of technology. Mostly with creating PowerPoint presentations for training sessions and the use of videos for teaching sessions. More recently due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I have had to learn how to utilize video conference technology such as Zoom and Webex, as it has become easier to hold high-quality virtual meetings and presentations while reducing the spread of the disease.  As the Bahamas is comprised of many islands and keys, these platforms make communication and training between nurses in different geographical locations simple, easy, and efficient. Although I am able to perform basic skills available on the platforms such as Screen Sharing and recording, I still have challenges with the use of Whiteboarding and breakout groups. I admit that I am technologically challenged and need additional training to be able to implement the use of advanced technology in improving my teaching sessions.

  1. Question:

What are some of the major similarities and differences among face-to-face learning, online learning and blended learning?

What are the strengths and weaknesses of each mode of delivery?

Is any one mode better than the other? Give reasons for your answer.

Online learning is learning that occurs on the internet, which allows learners to engage with instructional material at their own pace, from anywhere, available at any time. It is more cost-effective as Online learning doesn’t require in-person training, meaning you save costs on travel and related expenses. You also create digital learning experiences, you no longer need to purchase physical learning materials like books, tests, videos, and so forth. Online learning can be accessed anywhere an internet connection is available, anytime. It relies less on individual instructors and is less dependent on the person teaching it. With online learning, instructors can take a multimodal learning approach with links, videos, text, assessments, and more, making it more interactive.

Face-to-face learning refers to the traditional, classroom-based method of learning. This style of learning involves in-person sessions that are instructor-led. The pace of learning is set by the instructor and students in this setting are passive learners. It allows for social aspects as learning with your peers, in the same room, fosters a sense of learning that is physical, unlike online learning. The entire group is learning together, at the same time, at the same place. In-person, face-to-face learning allows instructors to develop 1-1 learning plans and relationships with learners that can’t be replicated online.

Blended learning is the concept of implementing both face-to-face learning and online learning together into a hybrid approach, allowing learners to benefit from both methods of learning. When students learn in this type setting they not only master the subject, they also master the use of technology.

Both online and face-to-face learning methods have their own set of unique advantages and disadvantages. While a lot of learners may still prefer the discipline and familiarity that face-to-face learning brings, there is no denying the immense benefits of online learning. The self-paced nature of eLearning content may be highly favorable to the modern learner
